The University, since its establishment in 1969 vide Kashmir And Jammu Universities Act, 1969 following the bifurcation of the erstwhile university of Jammu and Kashmir has been consistently moving ahead in academic and co-curricular activities. It has grown and developed as one of India’s prestigious universities with its commitment and focus on its core functions of teaching, research, publication, examination and extension.
The University offers around seventy postgraduate and undergraduate courses in different faculties. Our research programmes range across many disciplines, imparting Ph.D. in 37 and M.Phil. in 26 disciplines. The University of Jammu is an affiliating University; 126 colleges have been affiliated with it. Our main campus, apart from the teaching departments, also houses the Directorate of Distance Education which has an enrollment of about 2800 students at the undergraduate level and about 8400 students at the post graduate level. The University has seven functional campuses located at Bhaderwah, Kathua, Reasi, Ramnagar, Udhampur, Kishtwar and Poonch. These campuses offer various programmes to meet the demand and aspirations of the people living in these areas.
The hallmark of any academic excellence is the highest standards of teaching, research and an environment and culture conducive to learning. It is heartening to inform you that the University of Jammu is making rapid strides in all areas of its functioning. We have made several new beginnings and taken many important initiatives. We have redesigned our academic programmes under Choice based Credit system, semester system and have undertaken other examinations and administrative reforms. We endeavour to introduce new job oriented programmes that are in sync with emerging national and global trends as well as relevant to the regional and local needs. Providing world class facilities, encouraging sports and extracurricular activities for the holistic development of the students is something that we encourage at the University of Jammu.
As an institution of higher education, we understand our responsibility of increasing access, promoting equity and ensuring quality and excellence. While we realize that there are no shortcuts to excellence, however, University of Jammu assures you that quality is the guiding principle and cornerstone of the functioning of all key performance areas of the University. Reflecting the University of Jammu’s growing reputation, We are glad to inform you that the University has recently been awarded 51st rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework conducted by Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The achievements of the University in the area of research, especially in High-Energy Physics, Glaciology and Bio-Technology are highly commendable. The University is involved in world class research through ‘A Large Ion Collider Experiment’ (ALICE) collaboration and is a part of the Indian team involved at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Experiment at the World Laboratory ‘European Council for Nuclear Research’ (CERN), Geneva. Further, it has also set up the National Apple Germplasm Repository at the Bhaderwah Campus. The University has been listed as one of the twenty-nine Universities in the country and the only University from the state under the “Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence” (PURSE) programme of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, based on attaining an h-index of 34 for the publications (from 1998-2008), and was granted Rs. 9 crores in 2010. In the second phase of the PURSE Programme, in 2016, out of 29 Universities of the first phase, only 23 Universities were retained and six new Universities were added. The University of Jammu has been awarded Rs. 16.75 Crores, in the second phase, on account of improved research performance, based on qualifying the minimum h-index of 45 for the publications from 2002-2012. It is also noteworthy that the University has been identified as a “Level 1” point-of-reference on the National Knowledge Network.
Our Academic Staff College, now known as Human Resource Development Centre, has been ranked 18th in the country by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, ahead of old established Academic Staff Colleges of many leading Universities of India. I feel privileged to share that the University of Jammu has been awarded A+ grade (Cycle III) with CGPA of 3.51 by the NAAC. University of Jammu has also been granted autonomy by the UGC and in terms of this graded autonomy University of Jammu is category I University. Moreover, just on the basis of aforesaid performance, University of Jammu has been provided Rs 100 crore for enhancing further quality in teaching and research. It is pertinent to mention that the journey of Quality Assurance and Assessment & Accreditation of the University of Jammu began in 2002, when the University was graded as a Four Star University, as per the system of accreditation prevalent at that time. A Centre for Quality Assurance was established in the University of Jammu in 2005 to further institutionalize the process of quality assurance. The University of Jammu submitted itself for reaccreditation and reassessment (Cycle II) in 2009 and obtained an A grade with a CGPA 3.17.
We hope to give an enriching, vibrant and a contemporary learning experience to the students, by keeping pace with the dynamic environment in which we operate. We encourage practices and policies that support healthy student activities. It will be our effort to create an environment where learning takes place both in and out of the campus. Student facilities like Gymnasium, Fitness Centre, Playgrounds, Auditoriums, Health Centre, Hostels, Placement Cell- are all available on the campus for the welfare of the students.
