Achievements :-
1. The department started a self- sufficient Nursery school and Day Care 
    Centre for University employees (and general public, in case seats are
    vacant) in 1997. U.G.C. sanctioned financial aid of Rs.2 lacs during IX plan
    period for the development of school infrastructure was followed by a grant
    of 10 lacs in 2007. Special grant have also been received to strengthen the
    infrastructure and other facilities. The nursery school currently caters to 50
   preschool children. Variety of teaching and stimulation material is available to
   meet the developmental needs of children. It acts as a laboratory for M.Sc.
   students besides providing contact point for reaching out to the community.
   Every year a parental empowerment programme is organised to strengthen
   home-school continuum. Interactions are held regularly with the parents and
   informal counselling facility is also available for the parents and children.
2. The department has a collection of different types of psychological tests.
    Facilities are available for developmental profiling of children besides
    providing informal counselling services.
3. The department is actively involved in Community outreach activities. About
    40 extension activities were organised by the department for various target  
    groups including Nursery School teachers, ICDS workers, adolescent girls,
    women and others. These programmes were organised in collaboration with
    agencies like WWF, ICDS (Govt. of India), Social welfare department,
    University departments, Home Science Colleges, Nursery school and
    various NGO's. Teachers are invited to deliver extension lectures. About 30
    lectures/popular talks were delivered by teachers during the period of
    reference.
Refresher Courses Organised by the Department:
1. Three UGC-sponsored refresher courses were organised by the department
    in Jammu in collaboration with Academic Staff College Srinagar and 
    Academic Staff College, Jammu for College and University teachers from
    Northern states. The courses were organised in January, 1998, Feb-March,
    2001 and Feb.-March, 2010.
Seminars Organised:
1. One day brainstorming session/workshop for developing location specific R&D Project for SC/ST population, in collaboration with department of Science and technology, GOI, on Sept., 25, 2012.
 2. A 2-day state level seminar on "Role of Voluntary Organization of Jammu and Kashmir in the Development of Women and Children" was organized in collaboration with NIPCCD, New Delhi from 29th-30th Sept. 2004.
 3. Meena Day was celebrated in collaboration with Young's India Social Welfare organization on 23rd Sept. 2003.
4. One day seminar cum interaction programme on the theme "Water the Elixir of Life" 12th Sept. 2003 in collaboration with WWF- Nature India.
5. 4-sessions on Schooling in early years from May-June, 2003
6. Interactive session on theme 'Schooling in the Early Years of Life' on 10th May, 2003
7. Seminar on "Children in Difficult circumstances" 18-19th Feb. 2002.
8. A seminar-cum-Training programme on preschool education entitled "Towards Better Understanding of Preschool child 21-23rd Sept. 2000.
9. A 3-day seminar on preschool education-"Towards Better Understanding of the Preschool Child" 20th -22nd March, 1998.
Number of students who have qualified NET/SLET examination till date include:
1. NET(UGC) : About 20
2. NET-JRF: 02
3. NET(ICAR) : 03
4. SLET : 15
PhD’s have been awarded till date:
1. Around 250 research paper have been published by the staff, research scholars and students of the department till date.
