HISTORIC

Potsherds belonging to Kushana and Gupta times represent history of Jammu excavated from two sites: Manda and Ambaran (Akhnoor).

The post Gupta period in Kashmir and Jammu witnessed a spurt in art and architectural activities. The region of Kashmir came into prominence under the Karkota King Lalitaditya and the Utpala King Avantivarman. The Temples of Martand, Avantiswamin, Avantisvara etc. are hallmarks of Post-Gupta Kashmir art and architecture.

The region of Jammu during this period saw the rise of 22 hill principalities, which provided political stability in the region and created conducive environment for the development of art and architecture. Some examples of these are the temples of Kiramchi, Babor and Billawar etc. In this museum replica of a Kushana Stupa and the unique 10th-11th century temple at Kiramchi have been recreated to supplement other exhibits.
