Presently displays
different artifacts like Stone Age tools, replica of rock art,
potsherds and terracotta, coins, manuscripts and ethnographical
items etc. The Museum offers a glimpse of
the cultural developments in this region from prehistoric time
onwards.The museum is divided into following five sections:
PREHISTORIC SECTION
The
prehistoric section displays Neolithic tools from the sites of Malpur (Jammu)
and Burzahom (Kashmir).Some examples of pre-historic rock art or petroglyphs of
Ladakh are exhibited by using photograph and replicas. Replica of Burzahom pit
presents the interesting Neolithic culture of Kashmir.
PROTOHISTORIC SECTION
Representation
of the Harappan culture in the context of Jammu is attempted here by displaying
a few exhibits from Manda (the only Harappan site in Jammu). Interesting items
on display are hair pins, pottery and terracotta artifacts.
HISTORIC
Potsherds
belonging to Kushana and Gupta times represent history of Jammu excavated from
two sites: Manda and Ambaran (Akhnoor).
The
post Gupta period in Kashmir and Jammu witnessed a spurt in art and
architectural activities. The region of Kashmir came into prominence under the
Karkota King Lalitaditya and the Utpala King Avantivarman. The Temples of
Martand, Avantiswamin, Avantisvara etc. are hallmarks of Post-Gupta Kashmir art
and architecture.
The
region of Jammu during this period saw the rise of 22 hill principalities,
which provided political stability in the region and created conducive
environment for the development of art and architecture. Some examples of these
are the temples of Kiramchi, Babor and Billawar etc. In this museum replica of a
Kushana Stupa and the unique 10th-11th century temple at
Kiramchi have been recreated to supplement other exhibits.
COINS AND MANUSCRIPTS
A
small collection of coins of different period as well as old manuscripts of the
region are put on display to highlight the historical significance of the
state.
CREATION OF
J&K STATE
This section presents
the scrolls depicting Ladakh campaign of General Zorawar Singh. It also shows
with the help of text panels, old maps and photographs how the state of Jammu
& Kashmir became a part of Indian Union in 1947.
ETHNOGRAPHY
The
state of Jammu and Kashmir is the home of a number of ethnic groups like
Gaddis, Baltis, Gujjars, Bakarwals, Hanjjis, Dogras, Kashmiri Pandits and Muslims,
Brokhpas and Ladakhis. An attempt has been made to present the facets of
culture of some of these ethnic groups through its dresses, costumes and other
household artifacts.
AUDIO-VISUAL
Space
for Audio-visual for showing films, documentaries related to the art and
culture of Jammu and Kashmir State was also kept.
The
lay out plan is given below. However, certain on spot changes were made when
the work of the museum was under progress.
