The Department of Zoology
came into existence in the year 1998 as a result of
the split of the erstwhile Department for Bio-Sciences
(Botany & Zoology) which was established in 1971.
The Department of Zoology is an
excellent institute of teaching, research and
extension in various fields of Animal Science,
imparting knowledge through M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D.
programmes The research activities of the department
are conducted under three main thrust areas viz
Aquatic biology, Terrestrial biology and Animal
Cytogenetics. The department is striving hard to excel
in training human resources in various fields of
animal sciences like Fisheries, Aquaculture,
Limnology, Entomology, Wildlife, Cytogenetics etc. and
has been choosen as a Centre for Special Assistance
Programme (SAP) by UGC for monitoring the dwindling
regional animal resources and thereby to formulate
strategies for the conservation of faunal diversity of
the state.
The department of Zoology has been developed as an
epicenter, imparting knowledge to all the concerned
stakeholders through various in house and field
research and academic activities.
There is an excellent placement
work track record of our students. They are making
contributions in areas such as Higher education, State
Administrative (KAS) in various National Scientific
Institute, Indian Forest Services, States Fisheries
Departments etc. Number of scholars of the Department
have been awarded research fellowships such as JRF,
SRF, Post Doctoral Fellowships, Fast track young
Scientists funded by various national research funding
agencies viz UGC, CSIR, ICAR, DST, Ministry of
Environment and forestry etc.
Apart from teaching the faculty
members are being invited by various National
Universities and Institutes for interphase meetings
and for consulting collaborative research programme.
The department is always trying to incorporate
innovative ideas to make it a centre of excellence.
