In 2008, as a part of academics, a
highly professional Post Graduate Course in Human
Genetics was started. In year 2010, vide Jammu
University Council Resolution No. 69.53. The
nomenclature of the Department was changed to
INSTITUTE OF HUMAN GENETICS, UNIVERSITY OF JAMMU.
Hon’ble Chief Minister Jenab Omar Abdullah,
inaugurated IHG on 26th February, 2011. The Academics
and Research in the field of human genetic diseases
are of prime importance as it has direct impact on
human welfare.. Human Genetics and its allied fields
are emerging areas of research dealing with the cure
and treatment of genetic disorders. Students opting
for post graduation in Human Genetics have a wide
range of career avenues. A vast number of research
opportunities are available throughout the globe in
fields of Human Genetics viz. Medical Genetics,
Clinical Genetics, Population Genetics, Cytogenetics
and Molecular Biology. The passed out students of
Human Genetics have been placed in different reputed
research Institutes in India as well abroad. A number
of students have opted for careers in pharmaceutical
and biotechnological multinational companies. Students
from the department have qualified the CSIR-NET, GATE
and SET fellowships at state and national level.
