University of Jammu in collaboration with J&K Science Technology and Innovation Council, Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir, is organizing the JK Women Science Congress from 11th to 13th of February, 2024 to showcase achievements of women in Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and also to inspire the next generation of women to take up STEM subjects. The congress will highlight the moral, ethical and economic importance of gender parity in science. The United Nations General Assembly convened on December 22, 2015, to approve Resolution 70/212, which established the "International Day of Women and Girls in Science". This resolution formally proclaimed Feburary 11th as annual observation of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Women are an important pillar of home and society. No society can thrive and have meaningful existence without having scientific temper. Science, in addition to finding answers to bigger questions, can also solve small problems in daily life. As in other fields, there is disparity between the number and representation of women in STEM, it is an established fact with robust data to support it. There could be many reasons for that but two of the reasons are lack of awareness and role models. But if you look around, most of the women practically do all the experiments that run a laboratory named "Home". So this congress attempts to address both to introduce women girls to the women role models, to cite an example Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, DG-CSIR and women scientists in the area of Engineering, Physics, Electronics, Astronomy, Economics etc. considered to be women unfriendly subject and involve citizens and in particular women citizen, to explore and impart the confidence and awareness. This goal will be achieved by lecture series on the women scientists of international and national repute with elaborate emphasis on their experiences on being a women in STEM and contributions made. In addition, the achievements of the selected young women scientist in STEM will be presented and discussed by the invited women scientists. This will be complemented by the presentation of posters by the girl scientists who will be mentored by invited women scientists. Scientific adoption of the girl scientist by the renowned scientist may also be discussed. Mentorship by renowned women scientists will help in solving the problem that the girls face in pursuing science as most of the women scientist must have faced it themselves. The initiatives by the government of India and private agencies will also be publicized, so that girls are aware of the available opportunities.
