IHG (Institute of Himalayan Glaciology):-
Contribution of the University of Jammu in
Glaciology
The University of Jammu has made a humble but significant
contribution in the Himalayan Glaciology Programme by way of
conducting study on glaciers of Kashmir Himalaya (Liddar
valley glaciers, Harmukh glacier in Sind valley, Kol glacier
in Chenab valley) and Himachal Pradesh (Naradu glacier,
Kinnaur District) for past two decades under the expertise
of Prof. M.N. Koul (Department of Geography, University of
Jammu) and Dr. R.K. Ganjoo (Department of Geology,
University of Jammu). The results, thus generated on mass
balance study and past climate inferences, have been
published in reputed national and international scientific
journals. Also, in the process, a good number of young
personnels have been trained in the field of glaciology.
Recently, the DST has sanctioned a project to the tune of Rs.
45 lakh on the glaciological studies of Durung Drung
glacier, Zanskar, Ladakh . Besides, a fresh project, to the
tune of Rs. 50 lakh, on the study of snow and glacier cover
of Kangriz Glacier basin (Zanskar, Ladakh) has been
sanctioned by the Department of Science & Technology,
New Delhi. Both the projects are in progress in Zanskar
region.
