EXTENSION/OUT REACH ACTIVITIES
Apart from academic lectures the Centre is also involved in out-reach activities. The basic idea behind this exercise is to reach the downtrodden at the grassroot and sensitizing them about Ambedkar’s ideas. It also enable them for their upliftment and empowerment.
· The Centre started its Extension activity from September 2007 in the rural and urban areas of Jammu.
a) Govindpura (Sikligar di Kulliyan) near Jammu airport (urban area).
b) Village Shumali, Satwari, Jammu (rural area)
· On April 15, 2008, Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre organized a grand exhibition cum Sale of Soft toys, fancy items, decorating material and show pieces made by the down trodden women of Shumali village of Satwari in the lawns of department of Sociology on the occasion of 117th birth anniversary of Dr.Ambedkar. The function was inaugurated by Member of Legislative Assembly Jammu South Constituency Shri Raman Bhalla who was Chief Guest on the occasion.
· On Mahaparinirvan Diwas i.e. 6th December, 2008, Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre paid floral tributes to the Dr. B.R.Ambedkar at a special function in the Lawn of Ambedkar Study Centre Complex, University of Jammu. Distinguished speakers from different sections of society shared their views on the theme: “Contributions of Dr. Ambedkar and his works”. Scores of people including distinguished teaching and Non-teaching fraternity, Dalit activist, civil society and students attended the event.
· On Mahaparinirvan Diwas i.e. 6th December, 2009, Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre, University of Jammu in collaboration with Directorate of Distance Education today conducted outreach activity and paid rich tribute to Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar on his 53rd death anniversary. Dr. P.S. Pathania, Registrar, Jammu University; Dr. Meenakshi Kilam, Director, D.D.E, Dr. Poonam Dhawan, Director, CACE& E and Dr. Ashish Saxena, Director, Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre paid floral tributes to the father of the Indian Constitution at a special function in the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu. Dr. Poonam Dhawan, Director, CACE&E delivered the special lecture on the relevance of ‘Social justice and Ambedkar in contemporary India’. She talked about the praxis of social justice, constitutional and legal measures, gender and dalit mobilization and the role of Ambedkar in this direction.
The occasion was presided over by Mr. Pankaj Anand, BDO, Ghordi block. He spoke about the importance of the visit and also shared the schemes and programmes meant for the downtrodden. Dr. Ashish Saxena, Director, Ambedkar Studies Centre gave the welcome address and presented the brief life sketch of Dr. Ambedkar and his works; and also spoke about the functioning of the Centre. Dr. Yash Pal from Botany discussed in details on issues related to sustainability of the environment and also people’s role in its preservation. He advocated the role of people in saving environment in a sustainable way. Dr. Seema from law spoke about the legal laws pertaining to weaker sections and women. She gave the information about the fundamental rights embodied in the Indian constitution. Ms. Rajni spoke about women empowerment; it was followed by identification of problems and suggestive measures for effective rural development. Center also offered study kit and serving lunch for the participant. Ms. Roopali conducted the stage and Mr. Sunil Kumar presented Vote of Thanks.
