AMBEDKAR STUDIES CENTRE: A BACKGROUND

As we know that India has produced great thinkers and social leaders who, by their revolutionary and path-breaking thoughts and actions, have left a lasting impact on not only India, but on the world as a whole. They have developed indigenous ideas and have provided cultural and ethical identity to India. There is a great need to acquaint the teachers and students with their thinking and their work and to involve them in studies, research and field work based extension service programmes of constructive work.

Keeping this broader objective in mind, Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre, Department of Sociology, University of Jammu was sponsored by the University Grant Commission (UGC) under its Epoch-making Social Thinkers Scheme. It started functioning in the latter part of 2006. The objectives of the Centre are to acquaint teachers and students with the thoughts, actions and works of Dr. B. R Ambedkar and pursue studies, research and field work based extension programmes. Following his slogan of “EDUCATE, AGITATE and ORGANIZE, the centre is putting its best to follow the slogan in practice by percolating Ambedkar’s teaching to the academicians, civil society and masses; organizing them for their common concerns. In all, we must strive to establish inter-disciplinary scholarship through learning and disseminating the philosophy of Ambedkar at macro/micro level. Urgent need is to identify and consolidate the attempts by subaltern groups/institution striving for their social justice and reflect their concern in the mainstream debate, especially in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
