Yash comes from a remote village Seen Thakran in District Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, India, and works as a professor in the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, Jammu, India. Besides his role in teaching and providing academic leadership to the University as Head of the Department of Botany (2015-2017), and Rector, Udhampur Campus, University of Jammu (2023 onwards), he has guided more than 25 students in the field of mycology, mushroom diversity, characterization and ethnobotany in the North-West Himalaya of Jammu and Kashmir. He is working with his research students on the diversity of amanitaceous and russulaceous mushrooms, traditional knowledge, mycofoods, and the development of a database on the diversity and Indigenous knowledge of mushrooms to support their cultivation and conservation in the West and Trans-Himalayan regions of Jammu and Kashmir, and the cold desert of Ladakh.
