Piyush Malaviya, Professor and Head

Environmental Science

Dr. Piyush Malaviya earned his Doctorate in Environmental Science from G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar in 2001. He is a Professor and Head in the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu. He has significantly contributed to the field of Environmental Sciences with 23 years of post-graduate teaching and research experience. Prof. Malaviya has worked on bioremediation and phytoremediation of industrial wastewater, the toxicological impacts of wastewater on plants, and the socio-environmental status of the urban poor.

Dr. Malaviya has been awarded Dr. K. S. Krishnan Research Fellowship in Environmental Science, a prestigious fellowship of the Government of India, funded by the Department of Atomic Energy. He got UGC Raman Post-Doctoral Fellowship, to work at Texas Tech University, USA. Prof. Malaviya was also awarded the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship, by the European Union to pursue his post-doctoral research in bioremediation at the University of Warsaw, Poland. He has also been conferred with the UGC Research Award for work on industrial wastewater bioremediation and subsequently, the Annual Quality Assurance Award of the University of Jammu for the year 2016. Prof. Malaviya has been awarded the “OPCW Fellowship” by the Office for Prevention of Chemical Weapons, The Netherlands to attend the International Contaminated Site Remediation Conference in Melbourne, Australia and Chair a session. Professor Malaviya is a Co-Editor of 'Environmental Sustainability (I.F. 3.0)', and Associate Editor of ‘Environment, Development and Sustainability (I.F. 4.7)’ both Springer Nature Journals besides being a reviewer of many International Journals. He was conferred with the “Environmentalist of the Year Award-2016”, “Scientist of the Year Award-2020” and NESA Fellowship 2023 for outstanding contributions in the field of Environmental Contaminant Remediation, by the National Environmental Science Academy (NESA).

Professor Malaviya has completed research projects worth over 70 lacs. He has published more than Eighty-five research and review papers in various high-impact national and international journals with a cumulative impact factor of >250. Moreover, he has authored five books on diverse aspects of Environmental Science and is a member of several academic and research societies.
